This June saw the second of RDF’s successful Model Driven Development (MDD) events in London with nearly 50 Senior Business Leaders and Heads of IT from leading Financial Services companies and some of London’s premier Insurance companies. Model Driven Development is an approach that gives organisations the power to get more from less, enjoy closer alignment between IT and the Business – driving up quality, and to significantly reduce IT development spend through rapid delivery. The Mendix platform used for MDD allows custom development of applications up to 75% quicker compared with traditional software development methods giving an alternative to off shoring, purchasing expensive packaged software and high risk, high cost, in house bespoke development.

Model Driven Development with the Mendix framework

A few months ago we set out to verify the savings in time and effort that can allegedly be achieved with the Mendix platform.
We embarked on a pilot project, the BIN Sponsorship Application, using the Mendix framework.  Our aim was twofold:
         •     To evaluate the framework
         •     To investigate the process, e.g. productivity, skills required, documentation, etc

To date I have been reader rather than writer of blogs but recently I joined a new company and I’ve got a story tell.
I started with the company in question, RDF Group , in January 2009 but have known them since 2000 as one of the few IT Solutions businesses out there that still cares passionately about high quality bespoke software and related services. That passion, and our software development processes which are based on precise modelling with UML means that we deliver an exceptional end product time and time again.

A model is a description of something that focuses on some aspects of interest and leaves out irrelevant ones. A model of a house, for example, may be an engineering drawing focussing on the structural aspects and leaving out aesthetics, materials, plumbing, wiring etc. In software, we use models to capture different aspects of the application we have to build (process, data, business rules, user interface, etc), usually before we build it.
