Scalable eCommerce

Northern Rock needed an eCommerce portal that could grow with their business and adapt to the changing needs of their web-connected customers. We delivered the application they needed and have gone on to cement close ties with Northern Rock, becoming their preferred eCommerce IT development partner.

Northern Rock Scalable eCommerce

The challenge

In order to continue to develop its web presence, Northern Rock needed a flexible, future-proof ecommerce portal to maintain its provision of high-quality service to its online customers, and to enable the rapid delivery of innovative online financial products and services to a competitive market.

The solution

RDF collaborated with Northern Rock to develop a completely new ecommerce portal. This was a large and complex programme which now supports all of Northern Rock’s main products. The Lending and Savings Portal was specified, designed and built using RDF’s well-proven incremental and iterative process, based on the industry standard Unified Process.

The ecommerce portal provides mortgage, lending and savings applications, online approvals for Decision in Principle (DIP) and Final Application Form (FAF) decisions, legislative requirements (KFI) and case tracking for the client’s direct and indirect customers. It is heavily integrated with third-party products, legacy applications and credit checking agencies.

The system architecture is based on J2EE, running on a WebLogic Application Server connecting to an Oracle 10G database, with a client GUI developed using Struts. Web Services, RMI, JMS, MSMQ are used to communicate to various downstream / upstream systems. The application is run on a secure clustered environment. The present configuration has been sized to provide capacity, throughput and response time capable of supporting the client’s current and future needs.

The result

We have been delivering core, strategic applications to Northern Rock since 1999 and have ranked as a “Top 3” supplier since 2004, providing consultancy, analysis, management, systems integration, bespoke software delivery and support and maintenance services to a number of business areas. Our reputation for high-quality, cost-effective and timely delivery led to our selection at the end of 2008 as Northern Rock’s sole ecommerce development partner.

David Dalgleish, Head of IT Solutions & Change at Northern Rock, said: “RDF is a valued strategic partner. They have a good understanding of Northern Rock’s systems and development methodology, and consistently demonstrate the ability to work closely and proactively with us and our suppliers.”

We are engaged in a programme to support Northern Rock’s ongoing online product marketing strategies, including delivering the capability to enable a parameterised set up of on-line savings products, allowing rapid product launches to the market.
