Train Refunds App

Available now on the App Store!

With clients based all over the UK and members of staff who commute, we spend a lot of time on trains. Delays and cancellations are frustrating, and we found the existing ticket refund process needlessly complex and time-consuming.

By applying the same tactic we would to the challenges of a project, we tackled the problem head on and found a creative solution.

Our aim was to ease the process of submitting a ticket refund claim whilst being on the go, and at the same time showcase our design, development, testing and deployment skills. As a result, the Train Refunds App was born.

Version 1.2 of the Train Refunds App is already live in the App Store with new and improved features and functionality. It currently supports refund claims through the following train operators:

  • First Capital Connect
  • Southern Railway
  • South Eastern Railway
  • London Underground (Tube)
  • London Overground
  • Docklands Light Railway

On the App’s Refunds tab, you can enter your contact, ticket and journey details. When you submit a claim, you can choose to simply submit it, save it for later or set its details as your default values in the App Settings. If selecting the latter, the fields are pre-populated next time you use the App and all you have to do is enter your journey details. At any point, while filling out the claim form, you can save it to the History tab for submission later, i.e. if you are in an area with no network, your device is low on charge or you have left the ticket receipt in the office.

If attaching the train ticket or journey receipt by photographing it, you can choose to save it to the photo album, which comes in especially handy for Oyster card and season ticket holders.

The History tab stores all submitted and saved claims for reference, but also works as a shortcut to resubmit a claim after changing the time and date; a feature ideal for commuters.

On the About tab, you can find instructions and helpful tips on how to use the App. It also contains contact information for all the supported train operators, with email and Twitter links for delay updates, to report a maintenance issue or to provide feedback on a specific journey. As the App validates against the time and date period, there is also an outline of the individual operators’ refund policies for reference.

We are hoping to provide you with a simple solution to a common cause of frustration by making the Train Refunds user experience as smooth a ride as possible.
